Summer in Dallas-Fort Worth can be brutal on your lawn. With temperatures regularly hitting the 90s and 100s, combined with our clay soil, maintaining a healthy lawn requires a strategic approach. Here are the essential tips to keep your grass green and thriving all summer long.

1. Water Early and Deep

The most critical aspect of summer lawn care is proper watering. Water your lawn early in the morning (before 10 AM) to minimize evaporation. Aim for 1-1.5 inches of water per week, applied in 2-3 sessions rather than daily light watering.

2. Mow High and Often

Set your mower blade to 3-4 inches during summer. Taller grass shades the soil, reducing water evaporation and preventing weed growth. Mow frequently enough so you never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade length.

3. Fertilize Wisely

Use a slow-release fertilizer in early summer, but avoid fertilizing during the hottest weeks (typically late July through August). Too much nitrogen during extreme heat can stress your grass.

Warning

Avoid watering in the evening as it can promote fungal diseases. Always water early in the day to allow grass to dry before nightfall.

4. Watch for Pests

Summer is prime time for lawn pests like chinch bugs and grubs. Look for brown patches that don't respond to watering, and treat promptly if you spot signs of infestation.

5. Maintain Your Equipment

Keep your mower blades sharp to ensure clean cuts that heal quickly. Dull blades tear grass, making it more susceptible to disease and stress.
